Happy 242nd Birthday to the U.S. Marine Corps!

Once again, I had the honor of making the cake for our local Marine Corps Birthday Ball. This year’s cake was a tall order, serving 120 people. Being mom to a 6 week old baby doesn’t leave much time for baking fun, so I decided to use a few techniques to try to simplify this cake:

  1. Edible images: Thank you Etsy for the quick and easy image printing. I included four photos from the Marine Corps League’s activities in the past year.
  2. Mirror glaze:Β I created a watercolor, tie-dye effect on the bottom tier using a combination of red, white, and blue mirror glaze. [Note to self: When creating a behemoth cake, make extra glaze!]
  3. Sugar flowers: These bright, gorgeous peonies added a huge pop of color to the cake and allowed me to incorporate that classic Marine Corps red.
